Bicky Tran, Executive Producer of Boat People

BICKY TRAN

EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

Bich-Ngoc “Bicky” Tran was born in Dalat, Vietnam where her parents met and started their lives together before Vietnam fell to communism. She escaped with her mother and three siblings at the age of 6 on a small fishing boat in hopes of finding the American dream. After spending a year at refugee camps between Indonesia and Singapore, they were reunited with their father, a prisoner of war (POW), who had already settled in Portland, Oregon after suffering years of political persecution. Following her mother’s advice to focus on getting a good education to fulfill that American dream and her father’s advice to choose a profession where you can help others, she is now a dentist and owner of Simply Dentistry - a dental practice located in Scottsdale, AZ. In the summer of 2019, Bicky met with filmmaker Andrew Lee Wilcox to pitch the idea of turning her family’s story into a documentary film as a tribute to her parents, and to preserve the history of the Vietnamese diaspora. Principal photography on “Boat People” began soon after in September 2019.
